Welcome to the new website of Skyline Literacy! We’re a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting learning and literacy throughout the Shenandoah Valley.

If you’re a first-time visitor, be sure to look at our About Us page to learn about our mission and services. Maybe you’ll want to Get Involved as a volunteer!

If you’re returning, make sure to have a look at our calendar of events and recent news.

Note For Tutors: It seems that some of the web forms are not working on the old site due to the move. Please be patient — the Tutor Blog will be coming soon, with all that functionality and more. For the time being, you can manually report your information via e-mail, or send it by the Comments box.

Tutor Reports Good News

October 22, 2008 By: skyline Category: News No Comments →

The following is a monthly report from one of our tutors.  These successful tutor-student relationships are possible because of the time and effort donated by our volunteers.  We are grateful for their dedicated work and our tutors are especially appreciated by the students whose lives they touch.

Hi Nelly, Bonnie and Beth,
Fall is really upon us, and driving back and forth to Weyers Cave is not a chore.  The valley is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Elena* and I have met every Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00. Sometimes we run over, so I really could add another half hour a week.  I like to end the lesson with some one-on-one conversation.  So many times we get carried away, and I end up looking at the clock with surprise!  We are working on so many things and she is such a good student.  We are concentrating right now on speaking correctly, using correct grammar and sentence structure.  Her preschool son is learning his alphabet and Elena is so excited to see him make progress.  She is so happy that she can actually be a teacher at home and help him with his letters and numbers.  She is very careful with her speech and proud when someone tells her that she is doing very well.
I am writing Lesson Plan #75 tonight.   I can hardly believe that so much time has gone by.   Elena is doing such a good job and is so eager to do better.   I think Skyline Literacy is a wonderful organization; thank the board members and the other powers-that-be for the support they are giving to us!
