Share your love of reading with someone you love this month and support adult literacy. Make a donation of $10 or more to Skyline Literacy between February 11th and 28th in honor of someone you care about, and we will send that person an card letting him/her know your gift was made in his/her honor. Every card sent will help our learners move closer to their goals of reading a bedtime story to their children or even reading their own book cover to cover for the first time!

Skyline Literacy will hold its Second Annual Play for Literacy Scrabble® Tournament on February 24, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Skyline Middle School.  This will be Skyline’s first fundraising event in 2013 and we are hoping to start the year off with a great response from the community.

Teams of three or individual players will compete for prizes in several categories.  Novice to experienced players are welcome!

We hope this will be an event people will talk about and look forward to, but, most importantly, we hope this event will highlight the need to promote literacy skills in this community!

All proceeds from this event will support literacy programs that empower people to become more productive employees, parents, and members of the community.  With your help, these adults can find employment or go beyond low-paying jobs and improve their families’ prospects for a better life.

Pre-event registration:  Individual $10, Team $30

At the door registration:  Individual $15, Team $45

]]> http://skylineliteracy.org/2013/01/10/1654/feed/ 0 Welcome New Citizens! http://skylineliteracy.org/2012/12/05/welcome-new-citizens/ http://skylineliteracy.org/2012/12/05/welcome-new-citizens/#comments Wed, 05 Dec 2012 20:21:25 +0000 skyline http://skylineliteracy.org/?p=1582 Rayisa and YuryRayisa Chesnova and her family came to the U.S. from the Ukraine almost six years ago.  Shortly after arriving in Harrisonburg, Rayisa heard about Skyline Literacy.  For her first meeting with her tutor, Rayisa brought her own English dictionary and textbooks!  In every session with her tutor, she kept her own vocabulary list, marked pages in her reading book, and ALWAYS asked for homework.  From her first meetings at Skyline, Rayisa shared her goal of becoming a U.S. citizen one day.  After working with a tutor and attending a Skyline English in her Harrisonburg neighborhood for a few years, Rayisa began taking classes at Eastern Mennonite University’s Intensive English Program to continue to improve her English.  In 2011 Rayisa enrolled in a Skyline citizenship class to prepare for her test and interview.  At the beginning of 2012, Rayisa and her husband applied for U.S. citizenship.  They passed their tests and interviews in the summer of 2012 and were sworn in together as new American citizens this fall.

In fact, this fall marks Skyline Literacy’s 25th year providing customized literacy programs for adults in our community.  As summer ebbed away, Skyline staff was busy assessing learners and training tutors. The hard work paid off! Over 150 adult learners are now meeting in various locations throughout the community.

It is not easy to build these successful learner groups, but having a team of
steadfast and dedicated tutors on board is an essential part of our winning
strategy! In fact, Skyline’s enduring legacy is forged on the vitality and strength of its volunteers –  you. You always step up to a new challenge, find an inventive way to connect with a learner, or continue to find fresh ideas to share; you know there is always another day, another individual who is ready to embrace a potentially life-altering transformation.

And the realization of literacy is indeed transformative! Over the past 25 years,
your gifts of time have allowed thousands of people to be lifted up by literacy. There is no typical learner, and each of these individuals has an extraordinary story to reveal or a goal that was finally captured!

Here at Skyline Literacy, we know that awesome tutors and volunteers who inspire and challenge us are what help these stories to unfold. We also know that without your continued help, the stories would be very different.  Goals would not be achieved and lives would not be changed.

So, from all of us at Skyline Literacy,
we say Hats off! Kudos! Thank you for your heartening and inspiring work and support!
