Enhancing Literacy for Adult Learners through Customized Programs

Services

Skyline Literacy serves adult learners in our community, ages 18 and above and offers a variety or programs including the following.

Basic Literacy
For Basic Literacy Learners, tutors meet with mostly native English speakers in one-on-one matches. Our goal is to help learners who read at first through fifth-grade reading levels to improve their reading and writing.

Skyline Literacy does not offer GED classes but assigns tutors with individuals that are in need of one-on-one instruction for a particular subject, such as math, social studies, reading or writing. These individuals may have passed all but one subject when taking the GED exam. They may be attending classes in the community but are referred to Skyline Literacy for special assistance. In special cases, some learners do not function in classroom settings.

English Language Learners (ELL)
For English Language Learners, our trained volunteer tutors meet with learners in one-on-one sessions, small-group ELL instruction and large-group ELL instruction. Most of these group sessions are offered at different satellite sites throughout the community.

Citizenship Preparation
Twenty-hour Citizenship Preparation classes are offered to ELL learners who are eligible to become citizens.  Tutors use materials from the United States Citizenship Immigration and Citizenship Service (USCIS). If participants are unable to pass the Citizenship test the first time, Skyline Literacy offers these individuals a one-on-one tutor to help them improve the necessary skills to pass the test a second time. In 2008-2009, twenty-five individuals who graduated from the Citizenship Preparation class passed the test.

Independent Study Program

Independent Study Opportunities allow Skyline Literacy learners to increase their exposure to more ELL or GED instruction through our computer lab that is equipped with language learning and GED online programs.

Studies show that the average ELL adult learner requires 100 hours of instruction to make significant progress. Skyline Literacy encourages learners to obtain more study hours apart from the time they spend with their tutors.
