Tutor Description
Qualifications:
- Must be at least eighteen years of ageĀ and have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
- Must have an interest in educating adults and helping them reach their full potential.
Expectations of Tutor:
- Attend 14 hours of tutor training (2 days).
- Meet with new learner(s) at the Skyline Literacy office for first session.
- Six-week follow-up meeting after the tutor training to give feedback and ask questions about your learner(s) and ask for help if necessary.
- Send in a simple monthly progress report by the 10th of every month.
Commitment:
- Commit to one year of tutoring when possible, aiming for 80 to 100 hours of instruction time.
- Meet with your learner for two hours weekly.
- Commit to help learner make improvements in skills they most need help with.
- Commit to helping learner meet their goals.
Objectives of Tutor:
- Understand the learner’s goals and work towards meeting those goals.
- Choose appropriate materials with the help of Skyline Literacy staff that will help the learner advance.
- Ensure that learner knows of other opportunities with Skyline Literacy, such as the language-learning computer lab.
- Encourage learner to take post-assessment after 80 hours of instruction.
- Keep track of learner’s achievements, celebrate with the learner when he or she accomplishes goals, and inform the Skyline Literacy staff of achievements.
- Respect your learner’s independence and dignity by helping them to develop their own abilities to independently access services, employment, and opportunities that will enrich their lives.
