On Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from sunrise to sunset (6:30AM – 8:00PM), Skyline Literacy will participate in the Harrisonburg Great Community Give. Donors can make an early gift to a Skyline Literacy starting April 5th 2023 through April 18, 2023. Early gifts will NOT count towards the determination of Power Hour prizes or Golden Tickets on the day of Great Community Give but will contribute to the overall fundraising amount.

This is a time for donors to give to Skyline Literacy in support of their ongoing mission of providing specialized adult education to the Harrisonburg and surrounding communities. A gift of any amount can influence the lives of many adults and families in your community by providing affordable classes and materials for Skyline students.

Skyline Literacy is grassroots, non-profit organization that has provided one-on-one and small group instruction in basic literacy (reading, writing and math) to native-born and foreign-born adult residents of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County since 1987, ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction since 1993 and U.S. citizenship preparation since 2010. Adult English/ Basic Literacy learners benefit from Skyline Literacy's services by being able to take advantage of educational, training, and employment opportunities. These benefits are highlighted in Skyline Literacy’s Vision, “which is a community where adults are empowered by literacy skills to be self-sufficient and to participate in the workforce, education, and civic affairs.”

In 2021 and 2022, we were able to continue providing educational classes to adults in Harrisonburg. This year we had a total of 325 students participate in the classes with 95 tutors and instructors. We had 105 ESOL students with activities ranged from speaking, listening, readying, writing, and survival skills. 26 families participated in our family literacy classes, which encourage parents and children to read together via a virtual store-time and activity. Our citizenship preparation program consisted of 110 students in which they learned about U.S. history, government, reading, writing, and interview skills. Our basic literacy courses are offered in a one-on-one setting where 39 students were paired with individual tutors. Students worked on skills dealing with citizenship prep, advancing education skills, increasing involvement in their children's education, and conversational speaking skills. We had 45 students participate in our Digital Literacy and English Conversation classes.

The focus of our programs - to strengthen the family unit by equipping them with lifelong literacy skills - remained the same while we strove to improve our services through remote learning. This is not possible without the amazing community and volunteer support.

Thank you so much!
